SHIGELLA SURVEILLANCE U n it e d S tates o f A m erica . — In 1971, a total of 12 98S isola tions of shigella was reported to the Center for Disease Control. This was an increase of 19.1 % over the 10 903 isolations reported in 1970.1 Utilizing the population estimates for 1 July 1971, the overall US attack rate was 63.6 reported isolations per million population in 1971, compared to 54.0 reported isolations in 1970. Children 1-4 years of age were at greatest risk with an attack rate of 238.4 per million. The seasonal distribution persisted with the greatest number of isolates being reported in the autumn. Table 1 shows the relative frequency of all shigella serotypes reported in 1971.

SURVEILLANCE DES SHIGELLA E tats -U n is d ’A mérique .

* The “calculated cumber” is derived by distributing the unspecified isolations in each group to their subgroups in the same proportion as the distribution of the spe cified isolations of that group — On obtient le « nombre calculé » en répartissant les isolements pour lesquels le sérotype n'est pas spécifié entre les différents sous-groupes de chaque groupe suivant les mêmes proportions que les isolements pour lesquels le sérotype est spécifié.

The six most frequently reported serotypes during 1971 are shown in Table 2. >See No. 36. 1971, p. 380.

The trend toward an increasing proportion of all isolates being S. sonnei continued, as it has since the fourth quarter of 1966. In 1971, 76.2% of all reported shigella isolations were S. sonnei versus 71.8% in 1970 and 60.9% in 1969.1 Concomitantly, S. flexneri has progressively decreased in proportion of total isolations. * See No. 22, 1970, p. 244.

1 Voir N» 22, 1970, p. 244.
