Wkly Epldem. Rec.: No. S1/S2 • 22 Dec. 1978 371 — Relevé épidém. bebd.: K" 51/52»22déc. 1978 SALMONELLA SURVEILLANCE K u w a it . — Salmonella infections constitute a major problem in Kuwait. The annual number of reported cases of gastroenteritis associated with salmonella other tlân S . typhi has been steadily increasing since 1972 (1 153 cases in 1977 compared with 258 in 1972). During the first ten months of 1978,1 150 such cases were reported, as compared with 704 during the same period of 1977. In addition, 846 salmonella carriers were detected up to the end of October 1978. The cases of gastroenteritis were mostly reported in children less than one year of age (729 cases) and those one to four years (219), while the carrier rate was greatest in persons 15 years and older. Typhoid and paratyphoid occurred mostly in the age groups five years and older (338 cases out of 365 for the first ten months of 1978). The fact that more than half the cases of gastroenteritis associated with salmonella other than S. typhi are observed among infants reflects the need to encourage breast feeding, and for better health education with regard to artificial feeding methods. SURVEILLANCE DES SALMONELLA K o w e ït .
