32 REGIONAL COMMITTEE: THIRTIETH SESSION Reiterating the importance of country health programming for health development; Having considered the present status of country health programming in the Region;l 1. URGES Member States to: (1) introduce and strengthen country health programming for integrated health development; (2) set up adequate mechanisms for implementation and further development of country health programming; (3) establish national centres for health development which will undertake training and research in country health programming; (4) cooperate with each other in training activities and in exchanging experience in country health programming research and development, in the spirit of regional self-reliance in health matters; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director to continue to: (1) cooperate with Member States in introducing and strengthening the country health programming process; (2) strengthen mechanisms for tne support of country health programming at national and regional level. R17 THE WHO FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME The Regional Committee, Having rev:1.ewed--ihe report presented by the Regional Director on the WHO fellowship programme; 2 Considering that implementation of the recommendations made by the representatives of Member States at the Conference on Regional Cooperation in the WHO Fellowship Programme will improve the health manpower develop- ment programme in general and fellowship activities in particular; Recognizing that those recommendations carry with them the support of Member States and that the improvements suggested will depend upon the national will to use the fellowship programme more effectively; 1 Document WPR/RC30/15. 2 Document WPR/RC30/16. ... ... .. ... REPORT OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE 1. THANKS the Member States that have up to the present received fellows for· training; 33 2. ENDORSES the proposals for future action, on the part of WHO and Member States, in implementation of the recotmnendatio.ns of the Conference, particularly the recommendations aimed at rationalizing the administrative arrangements for receiving and supporting an increased number of fellows; 3. URGES Member States to accept full responsibility for implementing those proposals in collaboration with WHO; 4. REQUESTS the Regional Director to continue evaluation of the fellow- ship programme, particularly of the utilization of former fellows on return to their home countries. WPR/RC30.R18 Seventh meeting, 5 October 1979 WHO'S ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF BIOMEDICAL AND HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH (INCLUDING RESEARCH STRENGTHENING AND CAREER STRUCTURES IN TROPICAL COUNTRIES) The Regional Committee, Having considered the Regional Director's progress report on the development of biomedical and health services research (including research strengthening and career structures in tropical countries),l 1. THANKS the Regional Director for his report; 2. NOTES with satisfaction: (1) the Regional Director's continuing success in attracting extrabudgetary funds for research; and (2) the discernible impact of the regional research programme at country level; 3. REQUESTS Member States to establish explicit goals for the strengthening of national research capabilities and to increase efforts to . improve career structures for research workers; 4. ENDORSES the recommendations of the Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Medical Research, made to the Regional Director at its fourth session; 5.
