- 474 — INFLUENZA International Influenza Center for the Americas. — Three strains of influenza virus A isolated from an epidemic which oc curred in the Canal Zone during September 1972 have been tested by haemagglutination-inhibition with H3 haemagglutinin specific and strain specific chicken antiserum. They are antigenically closely related to the A/England/42/72 variant. N etherlands (information dated 27 November 1972). — Since the third week of November, sporadic cases of influenza-like illness have occurred in Rotterdam. Two strains of virus A have been isolated from patients. They are antigenically closely related to the variant A/England/42/72 (H3N2). World Influenza Centre, London. — 1 Three strains of influenza virus A isolated in Wellington, New Zealand, during the epidemic which occurred in September 1972,2 have been tested by haemagglutination-inhibition and neuraminidase-inhibition. All of them are antigenically closely related to A/England/42/72. Y ugoslavia (information dated 28 November 1972). — An increased incidence of influenza-like illness has been reported in Belgrade and some other localities m Serbia. Clinically, the illness has not been severe. Six strains of virus A have been isolated. Although they were identified in haemagglutination-inhibition tests with A/HK/68 anti sera, they have shown some antigenic differences from this proto type. 1 Voir N* 44, p. 426 * Voir N* 43, p. 415. ESCHERICHIA C O U ENTERITIS ENTÉRITES À ESCHERICHIA COLl U nited K ingdom. — In Scotland during the three years 1969- 1971,1 203, 1 075 and 1 332 cases of enteritis caused by Escherichia coll were reported to the Communicable Diseases Scotland (CDS) Unit. Of these infections, the most frequently reported serotypes were 026 (16.8%), 055 (14.8%), 0125 (11.3%) and 0128 (9.2%). This relative frequency corresponds to that reported by the Public Health Laboratory Service (1971) for the whole of the United King dom during the years 1968-1970. Of especial interest is the marked increase in the number of infec tions due to E, coli 0142 during 1971,1 and this was reflected in other parts of the United Kingdom. Taking the overall three-year period, the greatest number of infections occurred during the months of July and November with the peak in September. During the three years under review, 155 mixed infections occurred. In 52 instances, two different serotypes of £ . coll were isolated from the same patient. In 103 other instances, a serotype of E. coli was isolated in combination with an organism of another genus. Shigella sonnet was associated in 51 instances, Shigella flexneri in 26 instances, salmonellae in 14 instances and other org anisms accounted for the remaining 12 combinations. Forty-one outbreaks (with two or more associated cases) were reported during 1969-1971, and of the 173 cases involved, 34 were symptomless excreters; 30 of these were detected in hospital out breaks and four in family outbreaks. The hospital outbreaks involved four adults, all staff members. Three adults were involved in family outbreaks, two of whom were mothers who were infected along with their new-born babies. One of the mothers was asymp tomatic. Six mixed infections occurred in the outbreaks, E. coli 0 86 and 0127 in five cases, E. coli 0 86 and 0125 in two, E. coli 0142 and 0126 in two cases, and E. coli 0142 and Salmonella Group B in two. 1 In CDS 71/12, ii visa pointed out that E. call 0142.K86.H6 was one of several E. colt serotypes which ore accepted as cnicropjthogenic but for which diagnostic sera were not available routinely At that ume, March 1971, it was expected that a diagnostic serum for E. coli OI42.K86.H6 would shortly be available com mercially and would facilitate the epidemiological study ol that serotype. Royaume-Uni.
