28 REGIONAL COMMllTEE: FORTY-EIGHTH SESSION I. URGES Members States: (I) to continue to develop policies. programmes and activities in line with the concepts of Nell' hori=ons in health; (2) to allocate resources to programme~ and activities that reflect the approaches of New horizons in health, especially when developing the proposed programme budget for 2000- 2001; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director: (I) to further promote the concepts and approaches of New horizons in health with Member States of the Region, especially as part of the renewal of the health-for-all policy; (2) to support where possible country initiatives which develop the concepts of New horizons ill health; (3) to further refine the minimum set of regional indicators, to agree on common data definitions and a common dataset which are in consonance with indicators for health for all and, among others, the World Summit for Children indicators and to continue to work with countries to develop country-specific indicators; (4) to support Member States to improve their capacity to collect, analyse and compare data on New horizons ill health indicators; (5) to present budgetary and financial information to the Regional Committee at its forty-ninth session in such a way as to make clear current funding, and proposed allocations, for the implementation of the concepts contained in New horizons in health by indicating increases and decreases in order to implement these concepts. WPRlRC48.R6 TECHNICAL BRIEFINGS The Regional Committee, Seventh Meeting, 26 September 1997 WPRlRC48/SRl7 Recalling resolution WPRlRC46.RII, which requested the Regional Director to arrange technical briefings at the forty-seventh and forty-eighth sessions of the Regional Committee; Noting the value of an extensive and in-depth technical briefing by the host country; I. DECIDES to continue to hold technical briefings on appropriate issues in conjunction with the Regional Committee; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director: (1) to continue to arrange technical briefings on appropriate subjects in close coordination with the host countries for future sessions of the Regional Committee held outside the Regional Office; REPORT OF THE REGIONAL COMMITTEE 29 (2) to arrange technical briefings on selected topics agreed by the Regional Committee when sessions of the Regional Committee are held in the Regional Office; (3) to explore the possibility of holding the technical briefings in such a way as to shorten the Regional Committee by half a day; 3. DECIDES that the subject of the technical briefings in association with the forty-ninth session of the Regional Committee in 1998 shall be traditional medicine, and that the briefings will be preceded by a presentation by an expert in the field. Seventh Meeting, 26 September 1997 WPRfRC48/SRl7 WPRlRC48.R7 DEVELOPMENT OF HEALTH RESEARCH The Regional Committee, Having considered the report of the Regional Director on the development of health research; I Recalling resolution WPRlRC46.R 12 on the development of health research; I. ENDORSES the recommendations of the Western Pacific Advisory Committee on Health Research (WPACHR) at its sixteenth session and the Strategic plan/or health research in the Western Pacific Region. /997-2001; 2. URGES Member States: (1) to undertake priority health research especially as it relates to the new directions advocated in New horizons in health, and to disseminate results which can immediately be applied for policy-making; (2) to establish a national focal point to coordinate and manage health research activities, if this does not already exist; 3. REQUESTS the Regional Director, subject to availability of resources: (1) to implement the WPACHR recommendations; (2) to continue to support individual and group research training activities; (3) to support research proposals in priority areas; (4) to report back to the Regional Committee at its forty-ninth session through his report on actions taken to strengthen the dissemination of research results in the Western Pacific Region.
