Schistosoniasls Besearch Projectl sicle-reactions to netrlfonate vrere observed. that resenbled. those of cllethyl-carbanazine 1n onchocerclasispatients. It was known that the prevalencc of onchocerclasis in the area rvas aboui 20% and. that transmission occumed, Lletrifonate has been usecl experimentally with some success ln the treatment of onchocerclasls but in nuch higher doses than enployed against schistosoniasis. somlasis rvho hacl [o assess 1ts possible actton on onchocerclasj-s ln the schisto-project, one conple'ce vlIIage lvas sùryeyed and a number of cases shown si.de-reactlons of the Mazzotii-type were exaralned. The results lnd.icate that the obsenred sitle-effects to netrifo- nate are Llnked to the infection with onchocerciasls. However no signifi- cant d.ininultion of the prevalence of the disease j.n those treatetl with metrifonate could be shorvn. To prove or disprove thisl a larger antl ro,ore cletaiLetl study ln an area with a higher prevalence of onchocerclasj-s wou1d. be necessary. A report with the results of the stutly was handed to Dr. D.Scottr Project Manager, 1T,H.O. Schlstosomiasls Research Project, to Dr. P. Krürner, Dr. D. Onori and to the secretariat of Dr. P. Zleg1er. The survey work ln Togo was started with one simpLe evaluationln IAIID/i POZEIfDA (no. t32;'ÿolltli, 'IoL7tE) ancl two tletalled etaluationsln KPESSIDE (no. 131-; gor8tN, Oo57tE) and L,EON (no. L77i 9o42tN, Oo5?tE). Kpesslde ancl trand.a Pozenda lvere chosen in close co-operation with VCU. There are permanent catohlng points on the Kero-rlver close to both.
