PRESENT POSITION 1;lITH RIDARD TO EL TOR CHOLERA IN THE REGION 1 During the period between 30 May to 8 August 1965, 1additiona1 cases and deaths were reported by two countries in the Region as follows: Philippines Viet-Nam 235 cases lTI cases 36 deaths 2 deaths
2 On 12 June 1965 a single case without death was reported from Malaysia (in Kapit District, Sibu, Sarawak). No further cases have been reported in this country up to date. 3 In other regions:
Burma, India, Pakistan and Thailand continued to have cholera cases reported. Afghanistan first reported the occurrence of El Tor cholera on 22 July 1965. By 25 July, 208 cases with 53 deaths had been reported. United States - Washington, D.C. One laboratory infected case of cholera (Halter Reed lVlilitary Hospital) was reported on 16 July 1965. The patient did not interrupt his work. There have been no secondary cases to date. Iran - The first confirmed cases of cholera El Tor "ere reported on 2 August 1965 (previous cholera cases were reported in Iran in 1939). By 14 August 1965, there was a total of 1860 cases ,nth 240 deaths. A localized outbreak of cholera was reported on 21 August 1965 in Kara Kalpak .Autonomous Republic and in the region (Oblast) of Khorezim, both situated in Uzbekistan (SSR). This outbreak 'WaS due to imported infection. ~-
