{1. \{-uou^**<-u:t) e.lr' From: Dr Ebrahim M. Samba Prograrme Dj.rector No" az/5 A11 Chiefs of Unit, Date: 20 August 1982 Services, Sectors and. Sub-Sectors MEMONANDW To EntomoloEi-ca1 situa tion The results are still satisfactory generally in the centre of the protected Progrrmme area (that is the Upper Vo1ta, Niger, Northern *oft, i{ortherr: Ghana, Northern Ivory Coast and Mali includ.ing the south-west). The sud.d.en increase at Tienfala has been reduced through treatment of the River Niger by fixed-wing aircraft. The first positive breetling sites (treated Inmeaiately by hand) appeared at three sites on the Band-iagara rj.ver system *ir"rL the first biting female was captured on the 14th of August. In the lvozy Coast, the d.ensities of the forest populations rernain high on the r:ntreatld. Sassand.ra, lower Marahou6 and lower Banda^na. Savanna sp6cies exist in the catches on the middle Corqo6 and' this might be related to tfre persistence of blackflies.with pale wing tufts in the Bui Send' area(nfacf tolta and its tributaries) where the larva} breetting sites are however colonized. by essentially forest populations. The case of Badlikaha has been attributed. to an artificial breed, ing site created. out of a punping station, and has been resolved. In Niger, a regular arrd. gpadr.lal increase in the catches associated with the pr"""r"" of positive breeding sites is probably attributable to inadequate applic-tion of farvicid.e by fixed.-wing aircraft. In Tabo (Northern Upper Volta) the first biting fly of the year was caught dr::'ing the Jlst week (1-l Aug.). fn the North of Ber:-in, the d.ensities of female blackflies have increased c<.rnsiderably on the Sota and. the Alibori concomitantly with art increase in the prod.uttiorr of breed.ing sites on the basins of the Or6m6 and Mono (in the Extension zone). ccz Dr c.A.A. It has also d.isappeared. on the White Bandarna and l6raba while the regres-. sion on Marahou6 ind Upper Sassand.ra basin (auri.rrg the 2nd week in August) is quite remarkable. There has been intensification of reinvasion in the south of the Ianra-ihra sub-sector (I<ara, t'Io and. possibly upper Keran). fbeatments Although the rise of the water leve} has delayed, spraying with Teknar @,.j,. H-U) by helicopter was more and nore difficult on the lowerparts of-certain rivers (fite the 3oa). Viking has adapted a system of "booms and nozzledron the PilatusPorter and the first trials permitted. an emission rate of 15 litres per minute. An experimental treatment on the }Larahou6 using longitudinal swaths has given proroising results d.espite a breakd.own which has neces- sitated. the revision of the system. Steps have been taken to mount on one of the fixed.-wing attd.oubll booms and nozzl-edrsystem for Teknar (on one hand) and 1 to 2OO litres vide-vite system (feklar + Abate and. if possible chlorphoxinr) preferably both ad.aptable on the same rnachine. Research Ihe v:isit of I[r S" Parkin (tC*/Uanfie]d) has enabled. him to info::n on the conditions under r,rhich Telcrrar @.!. H-U) is used. fCAP intend,s to put all factors into consid.ering the equi-pnent best suited for Telsrar. The remarkable reduction in the resistance to chlorphorim on the White Sand.ama and. the Marahou6 has been confirmed.. In add.ition to tire testing of Azametiphos (in laboratory and rivers in larra-I{ara) another product cod.e-nanned. OMS }002 is also being testecl and. its effect on non-target far:rra moni.tored. lcolornic developlent The Programme has still not received. the socio-economic d.evelolment report for Gtrana. Three reports on studies previously und, ertaken have been ccmpiled. finally to facilitate their reference. Two of them concern the repopulation of the freed. zones and the third. report d.eals r,rith d.ams and watercourses of the Upper Vo1ta. I'- -1- Visitors/TenporarT Advi sers Mr Leonard. A"K. Antwi (Technical Adviser/V0u) is in the Programme Area for three months to carr1, out studies on the activity of acetylcholinesterase of brains of f ish from treated. and r.rntreated rivers. He will work in Upper Volta and Ivory Coast. Dr Mohamed. S" Omar (Consultant/npf and. VCU) will study the histochemical d.ifferentiation of filarial larvae forind. in S" daru:osu.m s.1. in Northern Togo and Benin for three nonths. Dr Robert J" Cooter (Consultant/vCu) is in the Prog:=rnne Area to continue studies for six weeks on the flight perfoxmance of S. d,atrurosum s.1. in Ghana, Togo and Upper Yolta ? - Dr Ebrahirn M L^" .
