TRICHINOSIS Sp ain . - Tnchinosis, caused by a small filiform parasitic nonatode (Trichinella spiralis), is transmuted to humans mainly through the ingestion of meat from infected livestock and/or game animals, including wild boar, During the period January 1981 to April T987, 993 cases of trichinosis were reported from 24' provinces of Spain. TRICHINOSE - La mchinoseiest une parasitose due à un. petit nématode filiforme (Trichinella spiralis); la contamination humaine-se fiait prin­ cipalement par l’ingesuon de viande de boucherie ou de venaison pro­ venant d’animaux infestés, dont le sanglier. , De janvier 1981 à avril 1987, 993 cas de trichinose ont été .signalés dans 24 provinces d’Espagne.

T he major sources of infection were identified as wild boar meat and home-slaughtered pork (Table 1).

Imported horsemeat was implicated as the source of the infection.1 Freezing and thorough cooking of horsemeat is a good preventive measure, but efficient horsemeat inspection is imperative.
