ASEPTIC MENINGITIS SURVEILLANCE U n ite d S t a t e s o f A m e r ic a . — In 1976, 2 923 cases of aseptie meningitis, resulting in 31 deaths, were reported to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) by 50 reporting areas in the United States, including Puerto Rico. The case total was 20% less than the average of the previous five years, and the lowest total since 1969. The Pacific, East South Central, and West South Central divisions had the highest case rates. California was the state with the most cases (701) and the highest attack rate (32.6 million population). Maine and Wyoming reported no aseptic meningitis cases. New Mexico and Nevada did not report on aseptic meningitis activity. The etiology was undetermined in most cases (86.7%). Seventy percent of the cases with known etiology were associated with pre sumptive enteroviral infection, 14% with confirmed enteroviral infection, 9% with childhood infection, and 7% with other viral agents.

Le total, inférieur à 20% à la moyenne des cinq années précédentes, est le plus bas enregistré depuis 1969. Les régions où l’incidence a été la plus forte sont celles du Pacifique, du Centre-sud-est et du Centresud-ouest. La Californie est l’Etat qui a eu le plus de cas (701) et le taux d ’atteinte le plus élevé (32,6 millions d ’habitants). Le Maine et le Wyoming n ’ont notifié aucun cas. Le Nouveau-Mexique et le Nevada n ’ont pas fait rapport sur la méningite aseptique. Pour la plupart des cas (86,7%), l’étiologie n ’a pas été déterminée. Quant à ceux pour lesquels elle est connue, 70 % étaient associés à une infec tion entérovirale probable, 14% à une infection entérovirale confir mée, 9% à une infection de l’enfance et 7% à d ’autres infections virales.
