SALM ONELLA SURVEILLANCE, 1973 R e p u b l ic o f K o rea .— In 1973, 426 salmonella cultures were identified among 1 644 specimens collected from various parts of the country by the National Salmonella Center, National Institute of Health, Seoul. S. typhi represented the great majority of these cultures with 334 isolations, followed by S . paratyphi B (44 isola tions), S . typhimurium (19), S. enteritidis (16), 5. paratyphi A (11), S. potsdam (1), and S. newport (1). As regards the sensitivity patterns o f the salmonella cultures tested, six o f the 334 cultures of S. typhi were found to be resistant to chloramphenicol and 28 to ampicillin, but all the S. typhi cultures were sensitive to gentamycin. Two cultures of S. typhimurium were found to be resistant to chloramphenicol, one of which also showed resistance to gentamycin. Six cultures of salmonella serotypes other than 5. typhi demonstrated resistance to ampicillin, two of which were S. paratyphi B and the others S. typhimurium.

The drugs of choice for treating salmonella infections in the Republic o f Korea were found to be in general chloramphenicol, ampicillin and gentamycin, although, since 1971, there were a few cultures which showed resistant patterns by the in vitro tests.
