CHLAMYDIA A U nited K ingdom . — The number o f reports of Chlamydia A infections has increased considerably in the last five years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (Table 1). This increase reflects develop ment in laboratory identification, and the recognition that chlamy dias are often to be found in patients attending venereal disease clinics. O f the 556 reports in 1975, for example, 335 (60%) were known to be from genito-urinary patients, mostly in the 15-39 year age group.
CHLAMYDIA A R oyaume-U n i .

In each year there has been a preponderance o f women (239 (71%) o f the 335 genito-urinary cases in 1975 were women), but this may be due to a tendency to take swabs more readily from the cervix than from the urethra. The reports demonstrate that the organisms may often be found in the uro-genital tract, and their possible pathogenic role in this situation is being studied in many centres. A smaller proportion o f the reports (18 % in 1975) are o f the detection o f chlamydia in the eye of patients with conjunctivitis, most o f whom are adults, but a few cases o f Ophthalmia neonatorum are also reported each year.
