Maternal, infant and young child nutrition: report by the Director-General

SEVENTY-THIRD WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY A73/4 Add.2 Agenda item 15.2 6 November 2020 Maternal, infant and young child nutrition Report by the Director-General 1. In February 2020, the Executive Board at its 146th session, noted the report on maternal, infant and young child nutrition1 and adopted decision EB146(20), which recommended to the Seventy-third World Health Assembly the adoption of a decision regarding this subject matter. As outlined in the consolidated report by the Director-General in the review of and update on matters considered by the Board at its 146th session,2 as it had not been possible to reach a consensus on proposed text for an additional operative paragraph, the Board decided to retain the text concerned in square brackets. 2. During the intersessional period, informal discussions between Member States led to an agreement on the final wording of the draft decision for consideration by the Seventy-third World Health Assembly. The text, including revised reporting requirements, was presented by the Secretariat in a briefing to Member States on 20 October 2020. No additional comments were received after that date. ACTION BY THE HEALTH ASSEMBLY 3. The Health Assembly is invited to consider adopting the following draft decision, containing the amendments to the text of decision EB146(20) agreed during the informal Member State discussions. For ease of reference, those amendments are marked here, with additions in bold and deletions in strikethrough. The Seventy-third World Health Assembly, having considered the reports on maternal, infant and young child nutrition,3 and recalling the mandates given in resolutions and decisions on: the International Code of Marketing Breastmilk Substitutes (WHA34.22 (1981), WHA35.26 (1982), WHA37.30 (1984), WHA39.28 (1986), WHA41.11 (1988), WHA43.3 (1990), WHA45.34 (1992), WHA46.7 (1993), WHA47.5 (1994), WHA49.15 (1996), WHA54.2 (2001), WHA58.32 (2005), WHA59.21 (2006), WHA61.20 (2008) and WHA63.23 (2010)); the WHO/UNICEF Global Strategy for infant and young child feeding (WHA55.25 (2002)); the WHO Global Comprehensive Implementation Plan on Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (WHA65.6 (2012)); maternal, infant and young child nutrition: development of the core set of indicators (WHA68(14)); ending inappropriate promotion of foods for infants and young children (WHA69.9 (2016) and WHA71.9 (2018)); and ending childhood obesity (WHA69(12) (2016) and WHA70(19) (2017)), decided to request the Director-General: 1 Document EB146/24; see also the summary records of the Executive Board at its 146th session, twelfth meeting, section 4, and fourteenth meeting, section 4. 2 Document A73/4, section 15.2. 3 Documents A73/4 (section 15.2) and A73/4 Add.2.
