Relevé êpidém. hebd.: N° 34 - 26 août 1977,.

As of 2 3 August, a total of 2 990 cases of smallpox have been reported to the Organization since the beginning of 1977: 2 985 from Somalia and five from northern Kenya as a result of an importation from Somalia ( Table I ) . No cases have been reported from anywhere else in the world. With the discovery of widespread smallpox outbreaks in southern Somalia, emergency measures were initiated by the Somali Govern ment to establish a country-wide programme which became fully effective in early June. Since week 25, there has been a rapid decline in the weekly smallpox incidence (Fig. 1) and the number of districts reporting cases has fallen (Fig. 2). Currently, 2 548 national staff and 20 WHO epidemiologists are engaged in the campaign. In week 33, there were 55 cases reported from five of the 16 Regions in the country. However, about half o f these are old cases pre viously unreported from old outbreaks. One case in Burao District, Togdheer Region in Northern Soma lia, was imported from Jowhar District, Middle Shabelli Region. This case was reported four days after the onset of rash on 27 July, and no secondary cases have been reported.
