SALMONELLA SURVEILLANCE Hospital Outbreak due to Drug Resistant Salmonella typhimurium C hile . — An outbreak of salmonellosis involving 154 infants was observed in the paediatric department of a regional hospital during the period 9 June to 8 August 1977. Salmonella typhimurium was identified as the aetiological agent, with 24.7 % of the coprocultures yielding this serotype, against 2.3% during the period April to June. The antibiogram of the 38 strains isolated showed a sen sitivity to furazolidone, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim and a multi-resistance to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, gentamicin and paromomycin. An epidemiological investigation was carried out and the necessary preventive measures undertaken.
SURVEILLANCE DES SALMONELLA Epidémie due à des Salmonella typhimurium pharmaco-résistantts dans un hôpital C h ili . — Une poussée de salmonellose affectant 154 nourrissons a été observée dans le service de pédiatrie d ’un hôpital régional entre le 9 juin et le 8 août 1977. L ’agent causal identifié fut Salmonella typhimurium, sérotype obtenu dans 24,7% des coprocultures (contre 2,3% seulement entre avril et juin). L’antibiogramme des 38 souches isolées a révélé une sensibilité à la furazolidone, au sulfaméthoxazole et au triméthoprime ainsi qu’une résistance multiple au chloramphénicol, à la tétracycline, à la gentamicine et à la paru* momycine. Une enquête épidémiologique a été faite et les mesures préventives voulues ont été prises.
