YELLOW FEVER EPIDEMIC - NIGERIA1* ’3 The following official information has been received from the Ministry of Health of the Government of Benue State. The out break occurred m the Oju Local Government Area of Benue State (not around Makurdi). From the onset of the epidemic until 31 December 1986, a total of 694 jaundice cases and 191 deaths was recorded. Vaccinations performed totalled 147 769. E d i t o r i a l N o t e : The original information available to WHO erroneously indicated that cases occurred near Makurdi, capital of Benue State.1Further investigation indicated that the disease was limited to the Oju Local Government Area of Benue State and Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State.1 Until 1 February 1987, a total of 361 cases and 54 deaths in Oju Local Government Area and an undetermined number of cases with 117 deaths in Ogoja Local Government Area have been officially notified to WHO by the Ministry of Health and accordingly pub lished in the WER. No deaths have been reported since 26 January 1987. An epidemiological and virological investigation is now under way and it will undoubtedly provide additional information on the true extent of this epidemic. 1 See No 49. 1986. p. 382 ! See No 51/52. 1986. p 399.

As previously reported,1 the Government Yellow Fever Task Force formulated a plan of immunization, with a first phase including 1.4 million people in the affected and high-nsk areas and some 3.5 million other people living in 11 neighbouring Local Government Areas. Unofficial information indicates that ap proximately 4 million people have now been vaccinated. 1See No 51/52, 1986, p 399

■Voir N» 51/52. 1986, p. 399,
