N EISSER IA G O NO RRH O EAE PRODUCING p-LACTAMASE (PENICILLINASE)1 Australia. — Thirty-six cases of gonorrhoea caused by a fUactamase-producing strain of N . gonorrhoeae had been detected in Australia up to the beginning of September 1977.2 A continuing surveillance of the disease has been maintained and two further cases were detected between September 1977 and mid-February 1978. The first case was notified in December and the organism isolated was resistant to both ampicillin and streptomycin. Penicillinase production was detected by a chromogenic cephalosporin test. The second case occurred in January 1978 and laboratory investiga tion for penicillinase production was initiated when the disease failed to respond to amoxicillin. One infection was contracted within the country and the other abroad. ■See No. 38, 1976, pp. 293-294. ■SeeNo. 45, 1977,pp, 357-359.

N EISSERIA G ONORRHO EAE PRODUCTRICES D E P-LACTAMASE (PENICILLINASE)1 A ustralie. * Voir N» 38, 1976, pp. 293-294. ■Voir N° 45,1977, pp. 357-359.
