OUTBREAK NEWS Ebola, Gabon and Congo (update).' As of 1 January 2002,32 confirmed cases have been reported (15 by laboratory testing and 17 epidemiologically linked). Among the 32 con­ firmed cases, there have been 23 deaths (17 in Gabon and 6 in Congo). Of these, 20 cases were detected in Gabon and 12 in Congo in villages close to the border between the two countries. An additional 9 suspected cases are under investigation (7 in Gabon and 2 in Congo). All contacts (who have had direct or suspected contact with the blood or other body fluids of a case) are being closely mon­ itored during 21 days for signs or symptoms of Ebola haemorrhagic fever. As of 1 January, 191 contacts are being actively followed up (96 in Gabon and 95 in Congo). ■ ' See No. 51/52,2001, p. 401.

Parmi ces 32 cas confirmés, ü y a eu 23 décès (17 au Gabon et 6 au Congo). Parmi eux, 20 cas ont été dépistés au Gabon et 12 au Congo dans des villages près de la frontière entre les deux pays. En outre, 9 cas présumés sont en cours de vérification (7 au Gabon et 2 au Congo). Tous les contacts (ayant eu un contact direct ou présumé avec le sang ou autre liquides corporels d’un cas) sont sous étroite surveillance pendant 21 jours pour dépister des signes ou symptômes de fièvre hémorragique Ebola. Au 1“ janvier, 191 contacts étaient activement suivis (96 au Gabon et 95 au Congo). ■
