Cholera situation in Somalia: May 2021

Key figures from the last 4 weeks, May 2021 Cholera cases in Somalia, December 2017 to May 2021 Suspected cases 816 Related deaths 7 CFR 0.9% Children <5 73% Distribution of cholera cases in Somalia, December 2017 to May 2021 Highlights In May 2021, a total of 816 suspected cholera cases and 7 related deaths were reported from Banadir, Bay and Lower Shabelle regions. From December 2017 to May 2021, a total of 18 410 suspected cholera cases including 98 related deaths (CFR 0.5%) were reported from seven regions, namely Banadir, Bay, Gedo, Hiran, Lower Jubba, Middle Shabelle and Lower Shabelle. The districts with the highest cumulative number of cases are Kismayo (2305, 12.5%), Daynile (2293, 12.5%) and Hodan (2205, 12%). Since the start of the year 2021, a total of 15 deaths have been reported from the eight districts of Abdul Aziz, Dharkeynley, Hamar Jabja, Daynile, Hodan, Adale, Afgooye and Karaan in Banadir and Middle Shabelle regions. This brings the total number of deaths reported since December 2017 to 98. This cholera outbreak is a continuation of the outbreak that started in December 2017 but there was a gap in the reporting of cases in the first seven weeks of 2019 due to the closure of the main cholera treatment centre in Banadir. The centre reopened in February 2019 and has since been managing and reporting suspected cholera cases. A total of 494 stool specimen were collected since the start of the outbreak, of which only 192 were laboratory confirmed for Vibrio cholerae, serotype Ogawa. . . . . .
