Foundations and awards Awards, including the proposal from the Republic of Korea to establish the Dr LEE Jong-wook Memorial Prize for Public Health
PROPOSAL 1. The Republic of Korea1 has generously proposed an annual endowment of US$ 100 000 for the institution of an award, within the framework of WHO, entitled the “Dr LEE Jong-wook Memorial Prize for Public Health”. 2. The award is proposed to be given annually to persons or organizations for their contribution in the following areas: research into and prevention, treatment and control of HIV/AIDS; research into and control of communicable diseases; or control of neglected tropical diseases.
BACKGROUND 3. The Director-General is the administrator of eight of the 14 foundation prizes, grants and fellowships administered by WHO (see Annex); the regional offices administer the remaining six. 4. These foundations have been generally founded by, or in memory of, eminent health personalities. The Darling Foundation Prize and Léon Bernard Foundation Prize are both a legacy of the League of Nations, whereas the others have been created since the establishment of WHO. Although the Darling Foundation and the Jacques Parisot Foundation are administered by the Director-General, they were both established under the laws of Switzerland. 5. With the exception of the Francesco Pocchiari Fellowship, the procedure for the award of prizes is similar. Any national health authority or a previous laureate can nominate a candidate for a prize. For each award, there is a committee and/or selection panel, usually consisting of the Chairman, one of the Vice-Chairmen, an additional member of the Board, and/or a representative designated by the founder.

6. The usual procedure is for the committees or panels to recommend one or more candidates to the Board, which makes the final selection. The prizes are formally awarded to the laureates during the Health Assembly or during the sessions of the Regional Committee.
ACTION BY THE EXECUTIVE BOARD 7. The Board is invited to consider the proposal of the Republic of Korea to establish an award for research in the areas of HIV/AIDS, communicable diseases and neglected tropical diseases. 8. Should the Board approve in principle the establishment of an award, the proposed Statutes would be drafted in cooperation with the Republic of Korea and submitted for the approval of the Board, together with recommendations for covering the administrative costs incurred with respect to such an award.
