Appointment of the Regional Director for South-East Asia 1. The appointment of Dr Samlee Plianbangchang as Regional Director for South-East Asia expires on 28 February 2014. 2. At its sixty-sixth session, the Regional Committee for South-East Asia, in accordance with the provisions of Article 52 of the Constitution of the World Health Organization and with Rule 49 of its own Rules of Procedure, nominated Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh as Regional Director for South-East Asia and adopted the following resolution:1 The Regional Committee, Considering Article 52 of the Constitution; and In accordance with Rule 49 of its Rules of Procedure, 1. NOMINATES Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh as Regional Director for the South-East Asia Region, 2. REQUESTS the Director-General to propose to the Executive Board the appointment of Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh from 1 February 2014. 3. The term of office of the Regional Director for South-East Asia has traditionally started on 1 March, whereas those of other regional directors start on 1 February after their appointment by the Executive Board. The term of office of the Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, which used to start on 1 October, was aligned accordingly in 2012. In order to ensure the alignment of the term of office of the Regional Director for South-East Asia with that of the other regional directors, Dr Samlee Plianbangchang informed the Director-General that he would cease to carry out the functions of Regional Director for South-East Asia on 31 January 2014. Consequently, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh would take up her appointment as Regional Director for a term of five years starting on 1 February 2014.

ACTION BY THE EXECUTIVE BOARD 4. The Executive Board may wish to consider the above resolution of the Regional Committee for South-East Asia, in accordance with the provisions of Article 52 of the Constitution and of Rule 48 of the Rules of Procedure of the Executive Board. 5. Further, the Executive Board is invited to consider the following draft resolution: The Executive Board, Considering the provisions of Article 52 of the Constitution of WHO; Considering the nomination made by the Regional Committee for South-East Asia at its sixty-sixth session, 1. APPOINTS Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh as Regional Director for South-East Asia as from 1 February 2014; 2. AUTHORIZES the Director-General to issue to Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh a contract for a period of five years from 1 February 2014, subject to the provisions of the Staff Regulations and Staff Rules.
