The Executive Board, at its seventeenth session, considering that one of the most important objectives of WHO is mental health as well as physical health and social'well-being; noting the growing importance given to mental-health problems in many countries of the world; and recognizing that although WHO has devoted its attention to these problems since the commencement of its activities, it is essential that governments intensify their activities as regards their mental-health programmes, recommended that WHO continue to pr'omote am inten sify studies in the field of mental health and give as much assistance as possible to governments in planning and carrying out progra.mmas wi til. this aim.l In view of the above, the Committee may wish to adopt a resolution along the following lines: The Regional Committee, Noting resolution EB17.R71 of the Executive Board, Recognizing the importance that mental-health problems are acquiring in many countries of the world; 1. RECOMMENDS that Member States include both short- and longterm planning in mental health in their annual programmes and budgets in public health, and 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director to prOTIde such assistance as may be requested by Member States in planning and carrying out such programmes.
