SHIGELLA SURVEILLANCE F rance. — In 1976,732 strains of shigella and organisms of the Alkalescens-Dispar group were isolated in France. This represents a 69 % increase over the previous year (432 strains). The monthly distribution o f the strains shows a very distinct peak in September and October. Whereas in 1975 the percentages o f Sh. flexneri and SA. sonnei were similar, in 1976 a very marked advance for Sh. sonnei was <xecorded, probably due to epidemics in the South o f France. SURVEILLANCE DES SHIGELLA F rance . . . 45 % Shigella du sous-groupe B (Sh. flexneri) . . . 36 % A lkalescens-D ispar........................................... 4,8% Shigella du sous-groupe C (Sh. boydii) . . . 2,1% Shigella du sous-groupe A (Sh. dysenteriae) .
