Results At the end of the workshop, the refined map of CDTI areas in Nigeria (based on the current REMO data) was developed and agreed upon by all the participating members of the NOTF as a true representation of the disease's distribution as of June 10, 1998 (see enclose map). However, the workshop identified areas that require further refinement and areas with results that are inconsistent with known epidemiological lentomological pattems. Arrival in Abidjan (15:20 ). Spent night in Abidjan. Dr Nuttall arived in Lagos on June 6 1998. June 7, 1998 Anival to Lagos (9:00). I tried to find my way to get to WHO office. Fortunately,I met a driver from UNICEF office. He kindly dropped me at the rWHO office at 15h:15. A preparatory meeting was held (16:00) at the WHO office with Drs Jiya, Gemade, Hedeghere, Nuttall, NOCP assistants. The general objective of the meeting is to refine the map of CDTI areasfor Nigeria and have it approved by the NOTF. The specific objectives are (i) to review with the NOTF partners the current REMO map of Nigeria, (ii) to integrate additional inpendently validated REMO data into the GIS; (iii) to analyse the data and to refine the map where possible in order to reduce the 'ÿellow" areas (areas where refinement should be done); (iv) to secure an official approval and recognition of the map by the NOTF. The tentative agenda and reading material were forwarded to participants. Unfortunately, they were not distributed to them. Drs Nuttall and Noma will find out the following day where the reading material and the tentative agenda are in case they were received by the WHO office. Sunday 7, June 1998 four objectives were set: (a) preparation of the workshop; (b) review of available data; (c) check the computers, install the GIS software & the Nigerian maps and the REMO data. The objective (c) was achieved on May 28, 1998: Mrs Ndeye Sy had entered into Excel (26May) all the data ORGANISATION MONDIALE DE LA SANTE REGION DE L'AFRIQUE CDTI WORKSHOP, REMO/GIS, Lagos 8-l I June 1998, WNLagos, Nigeria forwarded (Dr Gemade) and Drs Nuttall and Noma reviewed them after integration into GIS. All the objectives of day I were met. At the end of the day, Drs Noma and Nuttall had to seek for a hotel for Noma to spent the night. Decision was taken to move the following day in the same hotel than Dr Hedeghere. June B, l99B Briefing with the WR: Drs Nuttall, Noma and Hedeghere. Meeting with the Administrative officer on the budget on the workshop. Tea break will be given once aday, participants will have lunch together and perdiem will be adjusted to WHOlLagos rates. Other matters discussed were: meeting and hotel booking for participants from outside Nigeria. A fax with the revised budget will be forwarded to APOC Management for approval and allocation of a sticker number. The workshop was opened by the WR/Lagos. Additional REMO data were brought by NGDOs. Dr Nuttall and Noma entered them while others participants were working in small groups on printed maps to review the current REMO maps, to analyse the data and to define the CDTI areas based on the Guidelines for analysis of REMO data using GIS. June 9, 1998 Definition of CDTI areas continue in small groups At the end of the day, the REMO map of Nigeria was refined and CDTI areas were defined in collaboration with all the participants. Each participant received a colour and black & white printed REMO maps for wide use by all the partners of the NOTF. Departure of Dr Nuttall at l4:00. The NOTF computers were fixed. The data of REMO Nigeria were installed in computers. June 11,1998 A preparatory meeting on APOC Philosophy and concept of CDTI for facilitators was called at 10:00. The meeting was attended by Dr Jiya, Dr Elhassan, Dr Hedeghere, Dr Waston. I took this opportunity to brief them of the impact assessment studies and to request the support of the NOTF partners to the study team members. Debriefing of the WR on the workshop , the REMO and CDTI areas maps were presented to the WR. The opportunity was taken to introduce the impact assessment studies and requirement from the NOTFs and the WR offices. Atlas*GIS and Nigeria REMO data were installed in all available computers. There is a need to provide Atlas*GIS software to Dr Hedeghere whose computer does not have a CD-ROM driver.
