WESTERN PACIFIC REGION DATA BANK ON SOCIOECONOMIC AND HEALTH INDICATORS
Manila, Philippines October 1979
PREFACE As an aid to its own promotional. collaborative, coordinative and research activities, and as a po,slble contribution to similar activities by other bodies, the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific has established a data bank containing socioeconomic and health indicators for the year 1978 or thereabouts and covering 32 member countries or areas tn the Western Pacific Region. The list of indicators is given on Page 1. The data bank was first created to provide a regional analysis of the health situation, and its present composit.ion is tailored to the requirements of that analysis. The data bank is designed to suit Regional Ofrice needs Pl'imal'ily, and I'elevant data will be incorporated as they become available. In selecting indicators, an attempt has been made to cover the major sectors of socioeconomic and health development and to choose indicators that are oonceptually significant. offer comparabiltty ovel' different countl'ies and yield as high a coverage as possible. Incomplete or otherwise unl'eliable data have been eliminated as fal' as possible. Consistency tests have been applied wherever possible to detect errors. In spite of these precautions. some of the data must be assumed to have a relatively low degree of reliability and comparability. Furthermore several facets of socioeconomic and health development had. unfortunately. to be omitted entirely OWing to the lack of reliable data. The data are at present stored on diskettes and a computeI' programme is being developed to print all or selected parts of the data bank. Various statistical programmes are also being developed with a view to more complex calculations, such as correlations, regreSSions, and other multivar1ate analyses. The form in which the indiVidual indicators are expressed is still experimental. As regards the computer storage of data, the total storage need has been reduced by studying the structure of data-sets and by storing only the more 'basic data. The extent of coverage va~ies from one indicator to another and from oountry to country. There is virtually complete coverage 1n respect of a few indicators, but less than 50 per cent coverage in respect of others such as health expenditure. Gaps are being filled as new data become available. The oollection of data is continuing and current data are also being oorrected and updated in.the light of new information. It is intended that this data bank will be updated annually and a time series established. The project of the data bank is being carried out by the Health Information Unit of the WHO Regional Office for the Western Facific.
