Through 16 January 1969, WHO had been notified of 64 374 cases of smallpox which occurred during 1968. Delayed reports are expected to increase this provisional total by 2000 to 4000 cases. This is somewhat more than half as many cases as were recorded during 1967. ; In Asia, 50 564 cases have thus far been recorded for the year 1968. India, Indonesia and Pakistan account for all but a small fraction.of the total. It is during the first few months of the. year that .the majority of cases occur in Asia, th is seasonal rise is observed in all countries except Indonesia which characteristically exhibits ho 1 specific seasonal pattern. ' In the countries which experience sharp ; seasonal variations in incidence, intensive outbreak investigation ■and containment measures, taken before smallpox becomes wide; spread, will control the transmission far more rapidly and efficiently ! than if delayed until the infection becomes widely disseminated. Special programmes with this objective in mind are, in fact, now being initiated in a number of parts of India and in Afghanistan.
