It was founded over 825 years ago by Bishop Absalon, who built a bastion on the centrally located Slotsholmen Island, now the site of Christiansborg Castle (the Danish Parliament). Copenhagen has a treasure-trove of monuments and copper steeples, uniquely preserved elegant townhouses and fine baroque buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is the gateway to the Nordic countries, with a role as a major trading centre and a two-way bridgehead with Europe for Nordic culture and political currents. In September the temperature is likely to be between 9 °C and 16 °C; it may be sunny, it may be breezy, there may be some grey skies or even occasional rain. page 2 Information Bulletin F o r t y - E i g h t h S e s s i o n The forty-eighth session o f the Regional Committee for Europe will take place from Monday, 14 September 1998 to Friday, 18 September 1998 at the WHO Regional O ffice for Europe, Scherfigsvej 8, DK-2100 Copenhagen 0 , Denmark; telephone (+45) 39 17 17 17; telefax (+45) 39 17 18 18. The Regional Office for Europe is a smoke-free environment. Registration Registration will take place in the lobby o f the Conference Building on Monday, 14 September 1998 from 08.00 to 09.00 and from 12.30 to 14.00. Opening of the session and first working meeting The opening o f the session will take place at 09.00 on Monday, 14 September 1998. The first working meeting will begin at 09.30 on the same day. Working hours Working hours, subject to the approval o f the Committee, will be from 09.00 to 12.30 and from 14.00 to 17.30. If required, an additional meeting will be held on W ednesday evening, 16 September 1998. Working languages The working languages o f the Committee are English, French, German and Russian. Statements made in any o f these languages will be interpreted simultaneously into the other three languages. Seating Representatives will be seated in the English alphabetical order o f the names o f the Member States. Secretary The Secretary o f the session will be the WHO Regional Director for Europe, assisted by the staff o f the Regional Office. Documentation Documentation will be available in English, French, German and Russian, and will be sent from the Regional O ffice to Member States by courier during the week o f 27 July 1998. All documents should be brought to the session. Information Bulletin page 3 L o c a l A d m i n i s t r a t i v e A r r a n g e m e n t s Travel Travel arrangements for both outward and return journeys should he made as early as possible. Representatives o f Carlson Wagonlit Travel will be available at the Regional Office to assist participants. Local transport There is a frequent bus service (cost DKr 35) from Copenhagen’s Kastrup Airport to the air terminal at the Central Station, where a taxi can be taken to your hotel. A taxi may also be taken from the airport direct to your hotel (cost approximately DKr 170). Buses have been arranged to transport participants to and from the Regional Office each day, and to and from arranged social events. Notices will be displayed in the lobby of your hotel and the Regional Office regarding any special arrangements. Travel by private car Drivers should be in possession o f a national driving licence, car registration documents and third party liability insurance. Visas Visas to enter Denmark are required for nationals o f Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic o f M oldova, Romania, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, The Former Yugoslav Republic o f Macedonia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Yugoslavia. The Danish Government will instruct its diplomatic m issions to facilitate the issue o f entry visas to Denmark upon presentation o f the letter o f invitation from WHO. Health requirements There are no special health requirements. Currency The monetary unit in Denmark is the crown (krone), divided into 100 0re. Money may be changed in the arrival hall at the airport, at the Central Station, at your hotel or in any bank. Exchange facilities will also be available for certain periods each day in the reception area o f the Regional Office. Electricity supply Electricity is supplied at 220 v - 50 Hz. page 4 Information Bulletin Lunch The Regional Office cafeteria will be open to all participants each day and will offer hot meals as well as a variety o f sandwiches and salads. Alcoholic beverages are not served in the Regional Office cafeteria. Lunch may also be taken in one o f the several restaurants in the vicinity o f the Regional Office. Information on these will be available at the Information Desk in the lobby o f the Regional Office. Medical and dental services The WHO Staff Physician will be available for consultation in the Regional O ffice dispensary on Wednesday, 16 September 1998 from 09 .30 to 14.30. At other times the Physician can be reached on telephone number 40 75 90 98. In case o f emergency outside office hours, there is an on-call doctor who can be reached on telephone number 38 88 60 41, or call 112 for the ambulance service. Emergency dental treatment can be obtained by going in person to 14 Oslo Plads. The telephone number is 31 38 02 51. Information Bulletin page 5 I n f o r m a l B r i e f i n g s a n d D i s c u s s i o n s o n t h e P r o g r a m m e s o f t h e R e g i o n a l O f f i c e In accordance with resolution EUR/RC45/R3, adopted by the Regional Committee at its forty- fifth session, technical discussions at future sessions o f the Regional Committee will be “replaced by informal briefings and discussions on the programmes o f the Office”. Informal briefing sessions will therefore take place on Thursday afternoon, 17 September 1998 between 14.30 and 16.30 on the following programme areas: • Country Health Development (including the EUROHEALTH programme) • Health Promotion and Disease Prevention • Health Policy and Services • Environment and Health The briefings will run concurrently and will allow an exchange o f views between Member States’ delegations and staff at the Regional Office. Delegates will have the opportunity to register for their preferred briefing session during the first days o f the Regional Committee. page 6 Information Bulletin S o c i a l E v e n t s The following social events have been provisionally planned. Wednesday, 16 September 1998 A limited number o f seats have been reserved at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, where the Danish Royal Ballet Company will perform. The cost o f each ticket is approximately DKr 250, at participants’ own expense. The impressive Grundtvig Memorial Church on the outskirts o f the city is visited, also Langelinie (site o f the Little Mermaid) and nearby Gefion Fountain. The tour ends with attendance at the Changing o f the Guard at the Royal Palace o f Amalienborg. Tuesday, 15 September 1998 A visit to the Louisiana Museum o f Modern Art can be arranged on request, if enough people are interested. Wednesday, 16 September 1998 at 10.15 (duration 7 hours) Castle tour o f North Zealand - An all-day tour through charming countryside north o f Copenhagen. Visit to Hamlet’s Castle (Kronborg), stop at the Queen’s spring and autumn residence, Fredensborg, and visit to Frederiksborg Castle with the National Historical Museum. Thursday, 17 September 1998 at 10.30 (duration approximately 4 hours) A walking tour through the main shopping area o f Copenhagen, including the larger department stores.
