( Disease Intelligence Centre, Department of Health, Mani/a.) SINGAPOUR. 1

170CHOLERA Asia PHILIPPINES. -The number of suspected cases of cholera reported during the fust seven weeks of 1969 has been very low- 48- when compared with 177 for the same period last year. The number of deaths believed to be due to cholera bas also been low this year (one) in comparison with the same period in 1968 (18). The reduction in the number of cases has been relatively Jess marked in the Greater Manila area than for the country as a whole - 32 cases for the seven-week period this year compared to 61 cases for the same period in 1968. None of the 48 suspected cases reported in 1969 have been bacteriologically confirmed. ( Disease Intelligence Centre, Department of Health; Mani/a.)

SrNGAPORE. - Further information has been received concerning the case of cholera El Tor (Inaba) which was reported on 11 February.1 The patient was a 73-year old Chinese labourer, an opium addict, who lived alone in a cubicle and purchased his food from hawkers. He feil ill on the morning of 7 February with severe diarrhoea but no vomiting, and was hospitalized the same morning. He died the next afternoon. The source of infection could not be traced. In this connection it is interesting to recall the occurrence of isolated cases of cholera in this area in 1965 and 1968, and therefore the need for systematic epidemiological surveillance is clearly indicated. 1
