DATE: February 7, 1994 WORLD BANK GROUP SUPPORT: World Bank loan: $34.0 million. The World Bank loan is for 20 years, including five years of grace, with a variable interest rate, currently 7.27 percent, linked to the cost of the Bank's borrowings. It also carries an annual commitment charge of 0.25 percent on the undisbursed balance. TOTAL COST: $44.5 million. OTHER PROPOSED FINANCING: Government of Peru: $10.5 million. IMPLEMENTING AGENCY: Ministerio de Salud ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: 2000 PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The objective of the Basic Health and Nutrition Project is to improve the health and nutritional status in the area, particularly among poor women and children by (a) increasing the use of maternal and child health and nutrition services by extending the access and improving the quality of services and (b) promoting better health and nutrition services, with an emphasis on preventive care and education. The project will finance (a) basic medical equipment for maternal and child health services at about health centers and 200 health posts and for about 2,200 community health workers; (b) vehicles for supervision; (c) medicine, micronutrients, and other supplies; (d) computers and printers; (e) office and laboratory equipment; and (f) basic instructional materials for health facilities.
