BANK NEWS RELEASE Contact: Pushpa Schwartz (202) 477-3651 I /1,1 FISHERIES DEVELOPMENT DONOR CONSULTATION WASHINGTON, October 10 -- Cooperation in the development of the world's fisheries will be the subject of the Fisheries Development Donor Consultation to be held in Paris, October 13-15, at the World Bank's European Office. Over 25 multilateral and bilateral donors will be represented. The Consultation will be under the auspices of the World Bank, the European Economic Community, the United Nations Development Programme, and the African Development Bank. It will discuss aid coordination in the fishery sector and the possible establishment of an information system on fishery projects throughout the world. Approximately $400 million a year of investment and technical assistance is now being provided by the international community to the fisheries sector of developing countries. Over the last three years, a series of informal exchanges among a number of development agencies has led to the consensus that better cooperation mechanisms should be established to increase the effectiveness of this aid. The Consultation is expected to cover such topics as improvement in the quality of fisheries aid projects, improved exchange of information, improvements in the consultative process and prospects for international cooperation in fisheries research.
