TELEPHONE: EXECUTIVE3-6360 February 20., 1957 Subject: Bank mission to .Argentina The World Bank is sending a mission to Argentina., at the request of the Argentine Government., to study the general. economic situation and the Goverrnnent's investment plans. The missicin is expected to a-rrive in Buenos Aires on P'ebruary 28. Mr. G. Lincoln Sandelin of the Department of .Operations for the J , -: ~ ..-;_ -· --- · - . ., .. :;· .· :"\:-· ~ ." &~....... Western Hemisphere will head the mission. The other members from the Bank• s • staff will be Dr. Harold Larsen, economic adviser; Mr • .Arthur Karasz, Economist; Mr. Joseph c. Mehaffey, Mr. Mari.a Piccagli and Mt-. Joseph Heymans., engineers. An agricultural adviser to be recruited from outside the Bank will join the mission later. Argentina became a member of the Bank in September 1956 and this is the Bank's first mission to visit Argentina. The mission will start its dis- cussions with gove+nment officials in Buenos Aires, and then visit other important centers to obtain at first hand an appreciation of the position of important sectors of the economy, especially agriculture, transportation and power. The mission will be in Argentina for about six weeks• •
