The World Bank's affiliate f~r concessionary lending has approved an SDR 20.6 million credit ($2~.5 million) for a project to rehabilitate the existing se~erage system in the capital city. The IDA credit will also help finance the provision of low-cost sanitation facilities. The project will directly benefit about 100,000 of the city's 782,000 people and will also benefit the entire population through the reduction of pollution and health hazards. To rehabilitate and improve the capital's sewerage system, about 130 {·· kilometers of sewers and pumping mains wf.U be repaired. The city's 17 pumping stations will also be rehabilitated and e/~uipment replaced. Nine waste stabilization ponds with a total area of, about 27 hectares will be repaired and improved, and about 600 new sewer service connections constructed. In addition, ~ome 3,700 pit latrines will be constructed, including 100 for schools. The $29.1 million project includes consulting engineering services, u1ainly for detailed design and supervision of·construction. Senior management and operational personnel will be provided to the Minis try of Lands, Housing .;1nd Urban Development and the Dar es Salaam City Council. 'The project will be carried out by the Ministry 'and the City Council which will establish a Dar es Salaam Sewerage and Sanitation Department. Preparation of the project was assisted by an advance of $1 million from the World Bank's Project Preparation Facility. Tanzania has received a $15 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and a supplementary IDA credit of $4 million for the expansion of wacer supplies in Morogoro (population: 39,000). In addition to this project, five IDA-assisted projects in the rural development and urban sectors have contained provisions for improving or expanding wate·r supply and sanitation in the country. The IDA credit is for 50 years, including lb years of grace; it carries no • interest but has a small annual service charge (0.5% on the undisbursed balances of the credit and O. 7 5% on the disbursed balances). NOTE: IDA credits are denominated in SDRs (Special Drawing Rights), whid1 are valued on the basis of a "basket" of currencies. The U.S. dollar equivalent of the SUR amount of the IDA credit reflects the exchange rates existing at th~ time of negotiation of the credit.
