TELEPHONE: EXECUTIVE3-6360 PRESS RELEASE NO. 486 SUBJECI': General Survey Mission June 28, 1957 to Thailand The World Bank is sending a. missipn to Thailand, at the request of the Government, to assist in the formulation of a long-term development program. The mission will study the country's resources and make recommendations for economic development in a.11 the main sectors of the econqmy. The group will begin its work in Bangkok on July land Will remain in Thailand for about a year. It will work j_n close cooperation with a group of Thai experts so that a begim.ling can be made during the course of the year on measures to carry • out the ma.in reconunendations and on the formation of a continuing development planning organization. Paul T. Ellsworth, Professor of Economics a.t the University of Wisconsin, will be mission chief; his deputy and chief,economist will be William M. Gilmartin., senior member of. the., Bank's r:,~ . ::if, who has been the Bank's Special Representative in Thailand for the past y~ar. Other members are G.H. Bacon, <'\ agricultural adviser, former Director of Agriculture in Sudan, and Romeo Dalla Chiesa, economist from the Bank's staf~. An engineering and industrial adviser will join the group at a later date. The mission will be joined from time to time by experts in special fields, such as transport, water resources and social services. This is the 16th general survey mission to be organized by the Bank. The •• others have gone to British Guiana., Ceylon, Colombia, Cubs., Guatema.la, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Malaya, Nicaragua., Nigeria., Somalia, SUrinam, Syria and Turkey. With the exception of t,he report of the mission to Jordan which will be published next month, all the mission reports have been published.
