RELEASE . eWorldBank 1818 H Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20433, U.S.A. • Telephone: (202) 393-6360 IDA NEWS RELEASE NO. 78/85 JUNE 8, 1978 IDA APPROVES $9 MILLION FOR WATER SUPPLY AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO SOMALIA The World Bank affiliate for concessional lending, the Inter- national Development Association (IDA), has approved two credits totalling $9 million for water supply and technical assistance projects in Somalia. The $6 million credit for the Mogadishu water supply project wi 11 help finance water resource investigations and construction works including: the extension of Balad Road well field; the extension and modification of collection and transmission systems, power plant, and electrical supply grid; stand by pumping capacity; the extension of the water distribution • grid; construction of about 40 additional public hydrants; and the construc- tion of workshop and field staff quarters. The project also includes the procurement of vehicles and equipment for maintenance, workshop, communica- tions, laboratory, and water treatment as well as advisory support, technical assistance and consulting services. Mogadishu's urban poor living in low-cost and temporary houses will be the main beneficiaries from this $7.7 million project. The benefits will include improved access to water and a reduction in effective water charges to customers. The $3 mil lion credit for the Technical Assistance Project will support a three-year program to help fin~.,ce project preparation studies leading to high priority investment in the economy and to expand the capacity of the Somali institutions to manage pre-investment work. This project's total cost is $3.8 million. PROCUREMENT: Approximately 60 percent of the total project costs will involve construction and supply contracts. Mechanical and electrical equipment and pipe are n6t manufactured locally and wi 11 ~e procured from abroad. Except as noted below, all construction and supply contracts financed by this credit will be awarded on the basis of international competitive bidding (ICB) in accordance with World Bank guidelines. The exceptions consist of the drilling of boreholes and the furnishing of equipment, materials and supplies urgently needed for the water resource investigations.
