Announcement of Resident Mission in Upper Volta on June 18, 1974

McNamara, President of the World Bank, today announced the establishment of a Resident Mission in Ouagadougou, Upper Volta. The mission will help to facilitate the development and implementation of the Bank Group's program of activities in Upper Volta. A second and closely related task of the mission will be to provide a direct link between • the Bank and the permanent Inter-State Committee for Sahelian Drought Relief which is also located in Ouagadougou under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Planning, Rural Development, Environment and Tourism for Upper Volta. In addition, the mission will maintain close contact with the WHO Unit recently set up in Ouagadougou to implement the program,,, for the control of river blindness in the Volta River Basins, for which the Bank is helping to mobilize the necessary external financing. Mr. Abdallah El Maaroufi 5 a Moroccan national, has been appointed Resident Representative. He will take up his duties in, August this year. Mr. El Maaroufi joined the Bank in July 1969 through the Young Professionals Program. During his employment in the Bank Groqp, Mr. El Maaroufi has had operational assignments in the Tourism Projects Department and the Western Africa Region where since August 1973 he has been working as a loan officer • with primary responsibility for Bank Group activities in Upper Volta • -0-
