C. 20433 TELEPHONE: EXECUTIVE 3-6360 IDA Press Release No. 71/26 Subject: $2.0 million credit to Senegal JU.i.~e 14, 1971 for technical and agricultural education The International Development Association (IDA) has approved a credit equivalent to $2.0 million for a project in s(~megal aimed at rehabilitation of existing training facilities for skilled manpower for industry, agricultu~e and fishing, and the expansion of technical training facilities for middle- level staff. The credit is the first Bank Group assistance to education in Senegal. • I The project responds to the needs of students not proceeding to higher education and will meet a high priority requirement for the rehabilitation and expansion of technical and agricultural education. There is an urgent need to make the country's school system more responsive to economic and social requirements. This need is becoming more acute because of the continuous migration to the cities and the increas- ing demand for skills to replace expatriate manpower. The project consists of buildings and equipment for a post-secondary technology institute, equipment and rehabilitation of two technical schools, one agricultural school at upper secondary level, and equipment for a re- organized merchant marine school. The project includes construction, equipment and furnishing of a post- • secondary technology institute at Dakar; rehabilitation, equipment and furnishing of two secondary technical schools at Dakar and St. Louis, and the agriculture technicians' school at Ziguinchor. An advisory group comprising representatives of the ministries of National Education, Technical Education and Vocational Training, and of Planning will also assist. The estimated total cost of the project is $2.5 million equivalent of which the foreign exchange component is about $1. 3 million. The IDA credit represents 80% of total project cost and will cover all foreign expenditures and $700,000 of local expenditures. The borrower is the Republic of Senegal. of 50 years including a 10-year grace period.
