SALMONELLA AND SHIGELLA SURVEILLANCE E l S a l v a d o r . — The reported incidence of unspecified dysentery increased in El Salvador during the last half of 1969, but an etiolo gical diagnosis was made only for a small proportion of cases. During 1969, special studies were carried out in the Department of Clinical Pathology of Rosales Hospital in San Salvador. Sal monella were isolated from 95 specimens of human origin. Sal monella typhi was identified in 72 of these specimens ; S. paratyphi B was identified 7 times and S. paratyphi A once, while 13 other serotypes were found in the remaining 15 specimens. Shigella were identified in 369 specimens. Shigella dysenteriae was found in 281 instances and of these 250 were S. dysenteriae 1, 13 were type 2, and the remaining 18 isolations were of types 3-8. S. flexneri was isolated from 78 specimens, S. boydi from 7, and S. sonnei from 3.

Au cours de l’année, des études spéciales ont été faites à ce sujet au Département de Biologie clinique de l’Hôpital Rosales de San Salvador. Des salmonella furent isolées dans 95 prélèvements d ’origine humaine. Dans 72 cas, il s’agissait de Salmonella typhi; S. paratyphi B fut identifiée dans 7 prélèvements, S. paratyphi A dans un et 13 autres sérotypes dans les 15 prélèvements restants.
