SALMONELLA SURVEILLANCE (information dated 30 September 1972). — In recent weeks, there has been an increasing frequency of isolations from bovine sources of 5. typhi-murium phage type la in Scotland. During the first six months of 1972, this phage type was reported on six occasions from isolations made at the City Laboratory, Glasgow (one abattoir drain swab), by the Veterinary Laboratories at Ayr (one bovine), at Lasswade (domestic pigeons) and at Perth (two bovines) and from an unwashed chicken by the Fife District Laboratory, Kirkcaldy. In the three months since the end of June, however, there have been 14 bovine isolations reported by veterinary laboratories at Edinburgh, Perth, Ayr and Aberdeen, while this week the City Laboratory, Glasgow has reported the isolation of this same organism from an abattoir drain swab and from a sample of imported boneless beef. Over the same nine-month period, human isolations of this phage type have been reported from Greenock during January and February (four cases), while subsequently, single cases were reported from Edinburgh in April, from Glasgow in July, and also from Paisley, Inverness, Kirkcaldy, Motherwell and from Edinburgh and Glasgow again during August and Sep tember.
