DVS = Degraded Vi-strains showing characteristic cross reactions with Vi-typing phages. UVS = Untypable Vi-strains, resistant to Vi n typing phages but reacting char acteristically with unadapted Vi-phages.

Chloramphenicol-resistant cultures of S. typhi were predominantly from South-East Asia: five from India, 14 from Indonesia and eight from the Socialist Republic of Viet-Nam. Most of the phage types involved had been encountered previously.1 However, four of the five resistant cultures from India belonged to phage type C5, which had not previously been observed to be resistant. The four re sistant strains from Mexico were indistinguishable from those isolated during the large outbreak in 1972-1973. Three resistant cultures from Chile belonged to type 46. All these resistant cultures belonged to the same R-type, CSSuT (see Table 2), and all the R factors involved belonged to group Hj. In this respect the type 46 cultures from Chile present the first recorded appearance o f the H i group of R factors in S . typhi in that country. S. paratyphi B Of eight cultures received from Ireland for special examination, one, of phage type Dundee, was resistant to ampicillin, streptomycin and sulphonamides.

* Voir N» 6, pp. 48-50.
