Infant and young child nutrition and implementation of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (Resolution)

30 REGIONAL COMMITIEE: FORTY -EIGHTH SESSION WPRlRC48.R8 INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD NUTRITION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CODE OF MARKETING OF BREAST-MILK SUBSTITUTES The Regional Committee, Recalling resolutions WHA49.IS and WPRJRC46.RI3; Having reviewed the report of the Regional Director on infant and young child nutrition and implementation of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes; 1 Acknowledging in particular the cooperation between WHO and other organizations in the field of nutrition, aimed at developing national plans of action for nutrition including the promotion of breast-feeding; Noting with satisfaction the continued expansion of the baby-friendly hospital initiative and the increasing number of baby-friendly hospitals in the Region; Noting also that, notwithstanding the measures initiated by an increasing number of Member States to support the objectives of the International Code, an increase in violations has been observed in several countries and areas; Recognizing that support for breast-feeding working women will contribute to increased breast-feeding rates; I . URGES Member States: (I) to intensify efforts directed towards the improvement of infant and young child nutrition, in particular the baby-friendly hospital initiative, the establishment and strict implementation of measures to give effect to the International Code of Marketing of Breast- milk Substitutes; (2) to ensure that support be offered to working mothers in order to encourage breast- feeding; (3) to report at regular intervals on the progress made in their national efforts; 2. REQUESTS the Regional Director to expand cooperation with Member States in the promotion of breast-feeding, in the exchange of information, and in training and research activities. 1 Document WPR/RC48/12.
