an outbreak of Illness caused by Echoviius type 24 in Hull. The responsible strain is peculiar in that primary isolation has only been successful in human amnion tissue culture although subsequent passage has been successful in monkey kidney and H EK tissue culture. Thirty-five older children and young adults with meningitis, in whom Echovirus type 24 was isolated from CSF, throat and/or faeces, have been admitted to local hospitals. Concurrently with the peak incidence of cases of meningitis general practitioners noted a con siderable increase of pyrexial illnesses in the community with some or all of the following features: headache, backache, sore throat, diarrhoea and vomiting. N o rashes have been recorded.

(Based on/D ’après: Communicable Disease Report, No. 34,1979; Public Health Laboratory Service.) Editorial N ote : Echovirus type 24 isolations have been reported rather infrequently in the WHO Virus Reporting System. Howevei, in 1977, a strong increase of Echo 24 was noted in reports trom virus laboratories in the German Democratic Republic* 1* * •and the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1978, no isolations o f this type were reported from the German Democratic Republic, while the number continued to increase in the Federal Republic.3 As in the outbreak reponed from the United Kingdom above, the majority o f cases were in older children and young adults. 1 See No. 50, 1978, p. 364. 1See No. 46, 1978, p. 334.

1 Voir N" 50, 1978, p. 364. 1 Voir N» 46, 1978, p. 334.
