SURVEILLANCE OF WHOOPING COUGH Papua N ew G uinea. — Epidemics of whooping cough have recently been observed in the Western Province. In the Balimo area, an epidemic occurred in June and July 1979. By the end of July, 31 cases had been reported in patients aged two months to seven years. No deaths were reported. In the Awaba area, 187 cases were observed up to the end of August (with one death in a five-year-old child) and transmission had apparently not been interrupted at that time. E ditorial N ote: The analysis of vaccination status of the patients is already available for the Balimo epidemic. It shows that of the 31 patients, seven had received four doses of vaccine, three had received three doses, six, two doses, seven only one dose and seven had not received any vaccine (for one case, the status was not known). The fact that more than half of the patients were registered as having received at least two doses of vaccine leads to concern as to the efficiency of the vaccination campaign, and in particular, the potency of the vaccine. The analysis of vaccination status in rela tion to age and (where possible) the date of onset of illness could indicate a need for special efforts for the groups whose immunity appears to be fading.

In addition, it would be essential to obtain laboratory confirma En outre, il serait essentiel d ’obtenir une confirmation du diag tion of the diagnosis, in order to rule out, in particular, the possibility nostic par le laboratoire pour éliminer en particulier la possibilité of adenovirus involvement (to be diagnosed on paired sera); the d ’une éuologie liée à un adénovirus (à diagnostiquer sur des sérums necessary means are available at the Disease Control Unit in couplés), les moyens nécessaires étant disponibles à la Disease Konedobu.
