INTRODUCTION APOC management since 2008 stepped up technical assistance to Liberia NOTF and the CDTI Projects with a view to strengthening the technical capacity of implementers at all levels. However manpower gaps has necessitated capacity building in almost all aspects of Programme planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Liberia has not assessed any funds to mount operational research because of the incapacity in writing research proposals. APOC management has given approval to APOC technical Adviser in Liberia to attend a five days course on "Scientific communication and publishing' organized by the Training centre in Communication, at the University of Nairobi, Kenya 5- 9 December,2011 to sharpen the skills of the technical adviser to improve the quality technical assistance to Ministry of Health in the area of design of oral poster presentation, writing of technical papers and proposal writing. TCC is a not for profit organization set up in 2006 and is in partnership with the University of Nairobi and is the first African-based Training Centre to teach effective communication skills. TCC has its headquarters at the University of Nairobi, Gecaga lnstitute, Chiromo Campus, and Nairobi, Kenya. 2 The Centre's mission is to contribute to the increase in profile, locally, and internationally, of African science, and its impact on the life of Africans, by improving skills in technical communication in all forms, at academia and other relevant forums, in African countries. The Training Centre in Communication (TCC) has also opened a new office in partnership with the Directorate of Linkages and Sponsored Research. ObafemiAwolowo University, lle- lfe, NQeria (OAU). The new office will train research scientists and postgraduate students from the Westem Africa sub-region. The oourse started on 5 December and ran through to 9 December 2011 and was organized by the Training Centre in Communication GCC) Nairobi. The forty five participants who took part in the course were from Wofld Health Organization- Afr*nn Programme for onchocercrasrs Control, University of Nairobi ,National Museums of Kenya, Kenya Medical Research Institute, Centre for Disease Control, Watter Reed Project, Nationa! Counci! for Science and Technology, lmpact Research and Development Oryanization, Kenya Methodist University, Intemational Rescue Committee, AMREF, lfakara lnstitute, Uganda Baati Ltd, University of Dar-es -Salaam,University of Agicufture, Abeokuta(UNAAB) and University of Maidugui Teaching Hospital. Pafticipants were from Libeia, Tanzania, Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya. 2.0 Learning obiectives and Expected outputs The key learning objectives are to: o lncrease current level of research knowledge and skills o Enhance specific skills in research communication and publishing . Develop networks for future collaboration and knowledge sharing Eacfi participant is expected to: . acquire a complete understanding on technical aspects of Research communication and pr.rblishing o Acquire necessary skills to replicate the training in their respective organizations . Learn from peer's experiences across the region . Formulate an action to follow-up upon return to their organizations The scope of the intensive five days course includes: o writing technical communication, inc. reports, theses, scientific papers, o reviews scientific papers for publication in international peer-reviewed journals, o preparing and giving different forms of oral communication for different audiences, . preparing posters, writing proposals, communicating in science (conferences, preparing applications, reviewing the work of others), o analyzing and presenting technicaldata using graphical methods, . designing research projects , managing projects for scientific and international organizations, . style in technical communication, communicating to non-experts 3 Training ilethodology 3.1 Training technique and Facilitators The style of training was highly interactive and the teaching methodology was based on adult learning techniques that include case studies, lectures, group exercises and discussions. The participants had been encouraged to come witlr their own materials, making it easier for them to critique their own work. aJ The entire course was facilitated by the TCC local team, Dr. Robai Gakunga a Palliative Care Specialist, Ms. Anne Marie Nyamu a Scientific Editor, Mr. Tonny Omwansa an ICT for Dwelopment Specialist at the School of Computing and lnformatics from the University of Nairobi and Ms Joy Owango a Scientific Communications Consultant and Manager of the Training Centre in Communication. Two new trainers co facilitated the course and these are Mrs Anuradha Khoda an lnformation Systems specialist and Mr John Kamanu an Agronomist. 3.2 Orientation of participants fur orientation session was conducted prior to the technical sessions where all participants urhere assembled for an informal "ice -breaking session" facilitated by Ms Joy Owango, mfliager of the training centre in Communication OCC). During this session participants inboduced themselves by describing their names organizations they represent, job titles and eperiences in Research. The facilitator made briefing on the training agenda, facilitators, administrative and logistic anangements. 3.2 Expectation of participants Participants were given post-it to indicate their respective expectations and concems was to help the facilitators to evaluate whether learning acquisitions have met the expectations of the participants and any concerns with regards to meeting the objectives of the course. 3.3 Technicalsessions 3.3.1 Plenary sessions The training workshop spent five days (December 5 -9, 2011) covering technical presentations and discussion sessions on research communication and publishing. ln the midmorning period of Day 1, sth December 2011, Ms Joy Owango introduced participants to learning and tools to help learning and how to learn and acquire skills. Participants were introduced to use of mind maps as tool for collating and structuring information logically. Demonstration of how to down load and use the software free mind was carried out. The next topic of the day scientific literature & scientometrics which was facilitated by Ms Anne Nyamu and Ms Joy Owango. The presenters stated the importance of publishing and listed the different types of publication. They further explain primary and non- primary publications, peer review and primary joumaltypes. ln the late afternoon up to the close of the day, participants were introduced to the structure of pimary scientific article and how to compose title and deciding about authorship, how to write addresses, abstract, introduction, materials and methods and results. tay 2 started in the early morning with recap of day 1 followed by presentation on how to write discussion, acknowledgement, and appendices and how to cite and compile references by Mr John Kamanu and Ms Anne Nyamu. Their presentation was followed by questions, cornments and discussions. ln the mid-morning the same facilitators made presentation on the writing process detailing how to write the first version, preparing the final version, how to subrnit a paper, scientific editing process, how to interact with editors, how to write revisions and what happens with manuscripts after acceptance. ln the late afternoon Mr John Kamanu tod< participants through the process of technical editing, proof reading, and what to do with a ptblished paper. The last topic of the day "how to write conference proceedings paper reuiew article and book chaptef was presented by Ms Anne Nyamu. 4 Day 3 started with recap of day 2 followed immediately by a presentation titled constructing figures a tricky art? The presenters Dr Robai Gakunga and Ms Anuradha Khoda dwelt on terminology in graph making, principles of designing graphs, old ideas to discard, new methods of data presentation. ln the late afternoon Ms Anuradha introduced R software for data management and elementary graphics. On day 4, Ms Joy Owango facilitated the topic on oral communication. The sessions on oral communication covered the following topics - Oralcommunication (preparation and planning, steps in developing a talk - Oral communication(medium/tools for giving a talk) - Oral communication (how to participate in conferences ) The final day 5, had Mr Tonny Omwansa making the presentation on proposal writing. He had the presentation broken into four topics as follows; - lnboduction to proposalwriting (understanding the donor ) - Proposalwriting and grant management ( initial stages developing the proposal, general structure) - Proposal writing and grant managemenUexercises , proposal writing and grant management (submission,evaluation) - Proposal writing and grant managemenU,(revision, strategy) grant and project management (discuss and decide on a proposal: which one to fund?) ethics in Science 3.3.2 Syndicatesessions ln addition to presentations participants undertook individual and small group activities, role play, made group proposal presentations, and had the opportunity to review and receive coaching on their own research or grant proposals. They also learnt how to structure presentations, to effectively communicate their proposals to donors. Apart from attaining skills and knowledge in research communication and publishing organizers of the workshop created a plate form that facilitated exchange, of information and networking among participants and also with TCC. 4.0 Evaluation Participant assessed each training session to evaluate to enabte the organizers to evaluate perception level of learning acquisition of the leamers. The organizers also conducted end of training evaluation at the end of the training sessions. A structured questionnaire was distributed to participants for their comments, followed by an open discussion with organizers. 5.0 GonclusionandRecommendations The workshop met the most participant's expectations and the quality was adjoumed to be good.
