~ M / R C ~ / R .5 'Ihe Regional Comnittee, 3 Having studied the document on Drug Addiction submitted by the Regional Director; Recognizing the influence of the socio-cultural background and environment on addiction to hashish as well as t o other drugs; Noting that inportant cultural, racial and constitutional factors predisposing t o drug addiction have yet to be investigated: Noting w i t h appreciation the effective action on the part of the Government of Iran i n controlling the production and import of opium and i n the treatment of addicts: 1. REITERATES the need for additional studies on drug addlotion in the Region t o be undertaken; 2. RECOhNEND.7 to Governments i n the Region t o take the necessary steps for the medical treatment of addicts; 3. REQUESTS the Regional Mrector t o continue t o co-operate with organizations concerned with the problem and to give technical assistance t o governments, upon request, in the i re f fo r t s t o suppress drug addiction; 4. REQUESTS the Regional Director t o study the social and medical problems created by the use of khet and t o report to the Regional Committee a t a future session.
