CHOLERA — In early May 1978, health authorities in the State of Slo Paulo, as part of the surveillance programme on cholera, sent strains of Vibrio cholerae isolated from the sewerage system of the city of Santos to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia, USA, to determine the presence and the degree of toxigenicity of the organism. CDC confirmed the presence of Vibrio cholerae, biotype eltor, serotype Ogawa, but stated that this strain, as an exception to the B r a z il .
CHOLÉRA — Au début de mai 1978, les autorités sanitaires de l’Etat de Sào Paulo ont, au titre du programme de surveillance du choléra, envoyé au Center for Disease Control (CDC) d’Atlanta, Géorgie (Etats-Unis d'Amérique), pour identification et mesure de la toxigénicité, des souches de Vibrio cholerae isolées dans les égouts de Santos. Le CDC a confirmé qu’il s’agissait de Vibrio cholerae, biotype eltor, sérotype Ogawa, mais a précisé que cette souche, faisant B résil .

On receipt of this information, the health authorities were able to reassure the public that there was no current risk of a cholera epidemic, the fear of which had caused both the Federal and State Governments to put into force strong control measures.
