Real Estate: draft capital master plan Progress report on new building at headquarters
1. By resolution WHA56.13, the Health Assembly confirmed its authorization to the DirectorGeneral to proceed with the construction of the new building at headquarters at a cost estimated at CHF 66 000 000, of which WHO’s share was CHF 33 000 000. 2. The new building was opened in October 2006. Although the general contractor is still executing the last finishes and corrections, the building is now fully occupied by some 240 staff members serving with UNAIDS and 230 serving with WHO. 3. Subject to the settlement of final accounts, the cost of the project is estimated to remain within the CHF 66 000 000 limit approved by the Fifty-sixth World Health Assembly. 4. The construction of the building is being financed by an interest-free 50-year reimbursable loan from the Swiss authorities of CHF 59 800 000, of which WHO’s share is CHF 29 900 000. Negotiations are continuing with the Swiss authorities in respect of compensation for the demolition of the V building, which amount is expected to cover the difference between WHO’s share of the total cost and WHO’s share of the interest-free reimbursable loan. 5. Similar to the practice adopted when the current main building was constructed (see resolution WHA13.46), the Health Assembly may wish to invite the attention of Member States, as well as foundations, institutions and other agencies and individuals, to consider the possibility of supplementing the decoration of the building by gifts of furnishings and decorations, which the Director-General indicates to be needed.
