INFLUENZA SURVEILLANCE M alaysia (13 June 1981). - A localized outbreak of influenza which began in March 1981 is now over. Most cases were in adults, 20-35 years old. One o f three isolated strains of influenza A (H1N1) virus has so far been investigated by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in London. It was similar to the A/England/333/80 (HlNl)-variant which is close to A/Brazil/11/78 (H1N1). Two strains of influenza B virus have also been investigated by the Centre in London, one was similar to B/Hong Kong/8/73 and the other closer to the B/Singapore/222/79 variant

SURVEILLANCE DE LA GRIPPE M alaisie (13 juin 1981).

WHO Collaborating Centre for R eference a n d R esearch o n I nfluenza, London . - Three strains o f influenza A(H1N1) virus iso lated in March and April 1981 in Senegal have been investigated. Two of them were similar to the A/India/6263/80(HlNl) variant and one to the A/England/333/80(HlNl) variant, Le. the same vari ants of the H1N1 virus which were frequently found in the northern hemisphere in the past season. One of three strains isolated from patients at the end o f May and early June m Cape Town, South Africa, was A/Bangkok/2/79 (H3N2)-like whereas the other two were nearer to the A/Bangkok/1/79 (H3N2)-like variant
