Influenza Ireland (7 January 1997). There have been very few signs of influenza activity so far. A few cases of influenza A and B have been diagnosed serologically and 1 case of influenza A has been confirmed by immunofluorescence test. Netherlands (9 January 1997).1 Influenza activity started to increase in the last 2 weeks of December and the first week of January. The increase coincided with the isolation of influenza A(H3N2) viruses in the network of sentinel general physicians. Influenza B virus was isolated from 1 case in the first week of January. Sweden (10 January 1997).2 Overall, absenteeism from schools and child care centres has been lower than in the 1995-1996 season while the number of elderly persons with respiratory symptoms in nursing homes is close to that reported last season. Epidemic levels of activity were reported in Stockholm and in Uppsala, 70 km further north, in December. The epidemic may have reached a peak in the second week of January. It was mainly associated with influenza B in Uppsala and influenza A in Stockholm. Since the first laboratory-confirmed case at the end of November, 53 cases of influenza A and 29 of influenza B have been reported. Three subtyped strains of influenza A were of H3N2 subtype. 1 2

Grippe Irlande (7 janvier 1997).
