ENCEPHALITE EQUINE DU VENEZUELA — VENEZUELAN EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS A m é r iq u e c e n t r a l e . — Investigators from the Department of Microbiology, Cornell University Medical College, New York, U.S.A., and the Department o f Preventive Medicine, University of San Carlos Medical School, Guatemala, have submitted a report to the Advisory Committee on Medical Research of PAI-IO on the results o f their studies in Guatemala, Honduras and British Honduras during 1965-1968, to obtain information on the geogra phic distribution of VEE virus in the Caribbean region. Previously other investigators had found the virus in the States o f Campeche, Mexico, in 1962; Veracruz, Mexico, in 1963; and Florida, U.S.A., in 1962-1963. VEE virus has repeatedly caused epidemics and equine epizootics in northern South America, and an epizootic among horses at Tampico, Mexico, in 1966 is also described in the medical literature.

VEE virus was isolated from sentinel hamsters exposed on the Atlantic lowlands near Puerto Barrios (1 strain) and Sayaxche (2 strains) in Guatemala during August 1968, near Puerto Cortés, Honduras (5 strains) during July-October 1967, and near Belize, British Honduras (2 strains) during July-August 1967. On the Pacific lowlands of Guatemala, there were five isolations in the Department o f Retalhuleu and two near Avellana in the DepartContinued on page 465

Continuation o f page 461 reported by India and Pakistan (East) is, however, higher than in 1966 and 1967 for the same period (Table 1 ). Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore have been experiencing an increase over the past three years, and for the first time this year, Laos was reported to be infected. Both the increase in the number o f cases and the more extensive geographical distribution within and among the countries probably reflect improved surveillance and reporting due to changes in the attitude towards the disease rather than any real increase and spread o f the disease. It is significant to note that though the number o f cholera cases reported is showing a declining trend, the disease is widespread throughout Asia.

1 Voir N° 28, page 455.

PLAGUE — Another bacteriologically confirmed case of rodent associated plague was reported on 11 July from New Mexico.1 The patient, a three-year-old boy, came from Jemez Springs, a village in Sandoval County, approximately 50 miles northwest of Placitas, where the first case of plague occurred. U n it e d S t a t e s .

A few days after having played with a dead chipmunk, the boy became ill with malaise and fever and was eventually hospitalized on 30 June. On admission, physical examination revealed lymphadenopathy in the left inguinal area. He subsequently developed meningitis and possibly secondary pneumonitis. He is receiving antibiotic therapy. Cultures of material from the lesion were morphologically com patible with Pasteurella pestis. Fluorescent antibody and phage tests were also positive. Animal inoculation is in progress. Collection of animals in the area is underway. » See No. 28, p. 455.
