INFLUENZA A ustralia (information dated 15 November 1974). — 1 In Western Australia, an outbreak of influenza-like illness charac­ terized by severe chest pain has attacked 16 students, aged 12 to 16 years, out of 39 in two dormitories of an agricultural school; the school is situated in a town of 3 000 inhabitants 130 kms south of Perth. The outbreak started on 31 October and ended 6 Novem­ ber. Only one of the eight adult staff had any symptoms. Strains of virus B were isolated from nine of the 13 throat samples taken. F rance (information dated 20 November 1974). — Two strains similar to virus A/Port Ctolmers/1/73 were isolated on 15 November from samples taken from an influenza focus in a Parisian institution. 1 See No. 42, p. 354.
